Order an iPhone, Activate at Home

Published by kbao at 9:37 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Following months of of speculation, AT&T and Apple have begun offering the iPhone 3G online with home activation options, albeit with the caveats that the phone must be activated within three days of receipt in order to avoid being charged for the full cost of the device, and the service only applies to new accounts at this time with those looking to upgrade being forced to do so at an AT&T store. Before, it was necessary to go into an Apple or AT&T store for activation, but no more.

Device activation is the same as was the case for the first-generation iPhone: Order the device from AT&T, wait for the package to arrive, then activate over iTunes. AT&T is also offering free shipping with new iPhone orders placed before December 19th in time for Christmas delivery.

That means that Christmas iPhone receipts will be much more pleasant. Interestingly, home activation only appears to be working if you order from AT&T’s website—as of this writing, Apple’s site is still directing you to the stores for purchase.
